Moss Glen Falls, Vermont in Black and White

Finally got out shooting some landscapes this week.  Things have really popped here in northern Vermont, the leaves are almost fully out and the hillsides have that beautiful new green color that makes this time of year so special, my favorite second only to Autumn.  We got a ton of rain last weekend and I got skunked at Moss Glen Falls in Granville Gulf, Vermont due to heavy water coming over the falls and tons of spray, couldn’t begin to get a good composition without tons of water coating the front of my lens.  I opted to shoot elsewhere with the plan to return later in the week once the water had settled back to more seasonal flows.  I’ll post those images next week.

This is a great waterfall to shoot, some would even say iconic in Vermont primarily because of its location, easy access from the road and well maintained parking lot.  I shot this years ago on film but actually never made it back with digital equipment to rework the scene.  I worked several compositions both wide angle and some tighter comps.  I actually prefer the tighter comps without the entire waterfall.  Oddly enough and despite the beautiful spring green I was seeing things in black and white and decided to process the images as such.  When making black and white images I find it’s critical to have some nice rich blacks to work with as well as some bright whites to provide contrast.  Here are some of the keepers from the outing.  Thanks for looking and I hope you are able to get out and enjoy Spring before it gives way to summer.
